THE ENGLISH FACULTY AT CLAREMONT
There are currently thirteen staff in the faculty, many of whom are specialist
English teachers and all of whom offer individual specialisms within the curriculum.
The Department work in a dedicated series of rooms within the main building, comprising
ten classrooms, office space and stock cupboards. Three of the teaching rooms have
interactive whiteboards and projectors, with a fourth room having a projector alone.
All rooms are networked on the recently installed television and video system.
THE CURRICULUM
KS3: English is taught in mixed ability form groups in Years 7 and 8; a banding system is introduced in Year 9 and refined as the pupils progress to GCSE courses in Years 10 and 11. The KS3 curriculum is in tune with current initiatives and Teaching and Learning strategies, such as The National Literacy Strategy. Pupils experience the structured three part lesson, comprising of, an interactive starter, main lesson and plenary session. All pupils are prepared for the SATs external examinations in Year 9.
KS4: The faculty offers two GCSE courses to all pupils: English Language is assessed by means of, 'Speaking and Listening' (20%), Written coursework (20%) and two terminal examination papers (60%). English Literature is assessed by written coursework, (30%) and terminal examination, (70%). Students are currently following the AQA Specification B syllabus.
KS5: ENGLISH LITERATURE: (WJEC): Students study a variety of texts, covering a range of Historical periods, Social contexts and Literary conventions. ENGLISH LANGUAGE and LITERATURE: (AQA): This syllabus offers students the opportunity to produce their own fiction and non - fiction writing, analyse the complexity of speech patterns and theory and, in addition, study a variety of texts written before 1900, together with a selection of modern texts. Assessment is by a series of Modular examinations, 3x AS units taken in Year 12 and 3x A2 units taken as terminal examinations.
