Gifted and Talented | G&T at Claremont High School
The ‘Gifted and Talented’ initiative has been running in schools for a number of years now. Its aim is for schools to identify high achievers in either academic or practical subjects. There are a range of definitions for Gifted and Talented. The EiC define ‘gifted’ learners as those who have the abilities in one or more subjects in the statutory school curriculum other than Art, Music and PE; ‘talented’ learners are those who have abilities in Art, Music, PE and Performing Arts. Identifying those pupils who are particularly high achievers is a difficult task. There is no single indicator that does the job of identification. There are several different factors which identify such pupils. It is like a jigsaw.
Gifted pupils in each year group will be identified by their Pupil Progress Manager, using data obtained from the above sources. Talented pupils will be identified by Art, Drama, Music , PE and Performing Arts departments, based on teacher observations and a range of other appropriate means (e.g. achievements outside school) and recognised assessments. Subject leaders then have the responsibility to use the cohort, as identified by the PPM, as a starting point for subject specific gifted students.
