English Department | Claremont High School

Ms. Beth Ragheb - Senior Director of Teaching & Learning i/c English and Literacy

English is an essential subject as it teaches literacy skills that are needed in all other subject areas. It is a highly popular subject area as the Curriculum allows for creativity and encourages a love of Literature. Literacy is taught once a week at KS3, a separate lesson to English, and allows students to develop the accuracy and writing skills they require in all their subject areas.

Most students take English Language and English Literature as separate subjects to GCSE in Key Stage Four; this is taught in mixed ability groups. The Key Stage Three syllabus teaches the skills students need to achieve in preparation for further study at Key Stage Four.

An intervention programme operates from Year 7 to Year 11, providing personalised learning opportunities to every student ensuring that the expected progress is reached.

The four main skills are reading, writing, listening and speaking. English Literature AS and A Level is a lively and challenging discipline, which can be successfully combined with all subjects. From September we will also deliver the IB Diploma, and as such students embark upon an international study of Literature and appeals to those who take pleasure in reading a wide variety of Literature and who enjoy expressing their opinions and developing independent ideas. The English department is a team of 13 specialists.

The English Department offers a range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities, including theatre performances, after school clubs and opportunities to participate in writing workshops or competitions.
