Claremont High School Academy

Key Stage 3 Mathematics

At Claremont we have a carefully designed curriculum to ensure we support pupils in their transition from primary school and then prepare them sufficiently for the start of their GCSE's

Pupils are banded into one of three ability groupings from an early stage and this helps us ensure that all pupils can strive with their Mathematical education.

Pupils are regularly assessed and given feedback and support to help develop any areas of weakness.

In order to support pupils learning they are provided with a wealth of resources including online textbooks, MyMaths, MathsWatch and a variety of other resources.

Recovery Curriculum

for all groups year 7 -9 we are taking a slow and steady approach towards recovering from the COVID 19 schools shutdown. Our first priority is to reintegrate pupils into the school routines and then we will start a slow and steady approach towards supporting pupils with addressing any gaps in their knowledge.

  • We have developed a coherent process that will support pupils through the first half of the academic year and beyond to ensure that pupils are well supported with closing any unexpected gaps in their knowledge.
  • When pupils arrive in September we will not begin the scheme of work until at least the second week of school. This will allow pupils to readjust to the classroom, and adjust to any new rules and routines in a calm and effective manner.
  • We have not adjusted our planned schemes of work as  we wish to keep as much normality for pupils as possible and the progressive nature of these schemes will allow us to close gaps through our teaching.
  • In late September pupils will complete an exam on all topics from the previous academic year.
  • Using the exam as a basis teachers set an action plan for the remainder of the term to help pupils develop skills that are less secure from the previous years content.
  • Pupils can download the 2019/20 topic sheets at the bottom of this page to help inform their revision.
  • This action plan will have small tasks to complete on a weekly basis that will help pupils cover any gaps in knowledge.
  • The tasks set will generally be completed using online resources such as MyMaths however printed resources will be available for pupils who do not have easy access to a computer at home.
  • Teachers will monitor the additional work pupils are completing and will review pupils action plans where necessary.
  • There will be an increased focus on communication with parents regarding completion of work so that parents can effectively support their children with their work.

Course Content

Years 7 & 8

Pupils in year 7 & 8 will be following the White Rose Maths Scheme of work.

This Scheme of work has been carefully designed to support pupils depth of understanding, making links between different areas of Mathematics and to quickly develop their critical thinking and problem solving skills.

There is an increased focus through the scheme of work to ensure that pupils develop a deep understanding of the mathematics they are being taught. This helps master the basic skills and techniques needed for future mathematical success.

The following links detail the sequence of topics covered in each year group as well as details about the objectives we will be covering to ensure success in mastering these skills.

Year 7 Overview

Year 8 Overview

(This information is new for 2020, for 2019/20 topic sheets go to the bottom of this page)

Pupils will complete in class assessments for all topics covered. These will be self marked and teachers will guide pupils in how they can improve.

Pupils will also complete an end of term assessment. These will assess all content learnt up until that point. These will be teacher marked.

All assessments and feedback will be kept in pupils assessment folders. Pupils are free to bring these folders home at any point to support their revision however they must ensure they are available in any maths lesson.

Year 9

In year 9 pupils will cover content that supports the transition form Key stage 3 to key stage 4.

We ensure that the common content from both the Key stage 3 and 4 curriculum is covered in depth and pupils are exposed to a range of challenges, including problem solving and non standard questions. This ensure pupils start year 10 with a secure knowledge of the fundamentals.

In order to further support the transition the scheme of work begins to use more GCSE language, CGSE resources and GCSE style questions to ensure pupils get used to this from an early stage.
