Key Stage 4 Mathematics
At Claremont, students will follow the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics Grade 9-1 syllabus.
The qualification enables students to:
- Develop fluent knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
- Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
- Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions
- Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
Exam Structure:
Students will sit 3 exams at the end of Year 11.
Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and worth 80 marks each. There are 2 tiers of entry - higher and foundation.
Paper 1: Non Calculator
Paper 2: Calculator
Paper 3: Calculator
There is a great demand on problem solving questions in the new GCSE and teaching focuses on this. We expect students to be able to tackle these type of questions in a confident manner.
In order to support their independent learning we provide students access to MyMaths, Mathswatch and an online copy of the GCSE textbook.

Year 10
Students continue to the GCSE syllabus in Year 10 and 11.
Students who start Year 10 in September 2023 or September 2024 will also be tested on the Year 9 content throughout Year 10 and Year 11.

Year 11
As the last remaining topics are taught in Year 11 there is more focus on exam skills and exposure to exam questions.

Further Mathematics
Top set pupils in year 11 will have the opportunity to study for the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics. This will be following an assessment in year 10.
This gives them the opportunity to explore some more advanced mathematics and will help them prepare for future study of the subject.
Content for this qualification is covered throughout KS4 alongside their studies for the GCSE.
