Innovation and experimentation at Claremont
Today’s student-scientists access tomorrow's technology
Claremont High School recognises the importance of technological innovation in teaching and learning, especially when it comes to science. That’s why the school has recently refurbished its old laboratories to create two new state-of-the-art facilities.
‘These will transform the way pupils learn,’ says Ms S Patel, Director of Teacher and Learning in Science. ‘The new laboratories feature safe, well-equipped practical areas alongside flexible teaching spaces. The design makes it easy to move from theory to hands-on experiments, helping pupils build confidence, skills and a deeper understanding of science.’
Ms Arbani, Teaching and Learning Leader, Whole School STEAM, agrees: ‘Equipped with modern workstations, up-to-date scientific apparatus and enhanced safety features, the new labs provide an ideal environment for both practical experiments and collaborative learning. Natural light floods one of the rooms, while smartboards support interactive teaching methods. The thoughtful layout encourages group work and fosters a sense of responsibility and independence in students as they engage with real-world scientific challenges. The dynamic spaces not only support the science curriculum, but also nurture a deeper enthusiasm for discovery and innovation.'
‘The recent refurbishment of the science laboratories has significantly enhanced science teaching in the classroom,’ adds Ms A. Patel. ‘The transformation has had a noticeable impact on both teaching and learning. Students now show greater enthusiasm during practical lessons thanks to a dedicated space at the back of the room designed for experiments and collaborative projects. The shift from circular pods to front-facing tables has led to a marked improvement in student engagement and has positively influenced behaviour. The rooms now feel brighter and more spacious, which has created an environment that supports focus and active participation.’
Ms S Patel is hopeful for the future: ‘The improved spaces will lead to stronger GCSE results and encourage more pupils to continue with science at A-level.’
Innovation, experimentation and trying new ideas has always been the way forward at Claremont.
