Claremont High School Academy

Taste of high school

Student Reporters Amrin Jaildeen 8.6, Aaradhya Mundada 8.6 and Maya Sidar 8.7 report on the recent Year 7 Taster Days

Have you ever wondered how Taster Days make that first step into high school feel less intimidating and more exciting? Over two days, on 26th and 27th June 2025, Year 6 primary school students starting at Claremont High School this September found out.

First, pupils are familiarised with school routines: where lessons are and when they can enjoy breaktime. One incoming student mentioned that the highlight of the Taster Days was, ‘Break, so I could play with my friends’, while another said, ‘Science, because I could do a fun experiment’. Also just the simple moments: ‘Lunch because the food is good’; ‘PE because basketball was fun!’ Even making a new friend at lunchtime… All these things combine to highlight what life is like at Claremont.

Feedback from the Taster Days revealed a mixture of nerves and excitement. Students admitted being ‘scared because people might be strict with us’, but also, ‘excited because of new learning opportunities’. Hearing the pupils ultimately reflect, ‘I feel excited about starting Year 7 after today’ is certainly reassuring.

Ms Winsala, Head of the incoming Year 7, recommends following the ‘Claremont Way’: ‘Always be APEER, which champions the following qualities - Aspirational, Perseverance, Excellence, Enjoyment and Respect. Participate in lessons, try extra-curricular activities, get involved, try something new - this could be a great way to make friends. Remember, it’s OK to be a bit anxious and all the staff are here to support you.’

These small steps soon help you feel part of the Claremont family. The school also encourages strong pastoral support, approachable staff members and much more besides. Have you ever wondered how a short Taster Day can turn nervous Year 6s into confident Year 7s? With structure, support and a taste of fun they don’t just survive the move to high school, they thrive.
